One book that I've enjoyed using on the first day of school is "Chrysanthemum" by Kevin Henkes (sp.?). You can then get to know your students by having them talk about their name or write about their name...etc. Maybe even an acrostic poem...

R eally fun
A great friend
H appy to be in third grade!
